How does the Chinese health care system compare to the other developing countries in the world?
0 0 0 0 0 Bill Chen Chinese healthcare is in expansionary mode. It can never catch up with demand because cities do not require passports for entry. The top end healthcare is good. And that is what the foreigner experiences. But there are huge pressures elsewhere.
0 0 0 Bob Thornton I agree prices are higher now.
0 Peter Elliott Not sure exactly when it happened, but my middle class mates all went crazy lol. Food cost more, dentists cost more, basically everything doubled and not only that, they started getting taxed at a much higher rate.
0 Graham Symes A perspective from New Zealand. Early this year my wife had intense abdominal pain during the night so went to the hospital and was seen immediately. After scans and tests she was told she had gall stones and needed removal. Stayed overnight and had the surgery the next day and were at home that evening. The cost? Zero as it is all paid for by the government.
0 0 Whitla Lindsay I had to go to Shanghai from Vancouver as I was refused service at the hospital and don''t have a “family doctor”, and can''t get one. Oh yes and I lived, wouldn''t have done if I stayed in Canada. NZ has the same system.
0 Martin Brown It would be extremely rare for anyone in NZ to not receive immediate care if that was needed. Elective surgery dors take longer, and there are people living a long way out of town, but if necessary there are community funded helicopters.
0 Whitla Lindsay And if a ragged homeless guy shoes up in emergency without an address suffering from debilitating pain? This one will “slip through the cracks” and his incipient heart failure will not be detected, he will die outside unnoticed.
0 Martin Brown That would absolutely not happen in NZ.
0 Ronald Do It’s interesting that what you described is exactly how it is in Vietnam. People here also flood to big cities to get better care, and doctors have a hard time keeping up. I wonder is there any other countries that have the same model?
0 Khengchat Ng Our Malaysian health care system was rated third best after Uruguay and France. Being a small country, even big cities are easily accessible. The network of government clinics is second to none. Dirt cheap for citizens ( with high quality medicines to boot ). People prefer health centers closer to home as the quality is also there. Preventive medicine ( eg childhood immunizations are delivered to the grassroots.) Very proud of our system.
0 S Harish How can they afford to have such low costs? The money has to come from somewhere. If not from patients, then from the government?
0 Suman Kwan What are the cons compared to the one in Germany?
0 Yawi Julo Like I said in the answer, the environment in Germany is normally better. The Germany insurance covers all. And what I like most is that in Germany you usually have a hausartzt (home doctor), whom you well know and trust. This could solve a lot doctor-patient relay problem.
0 Rosemary Zhu A good part of Chinese government is that they are willing to learn the good parts of other government or system. Now Shanghai strat to copy the hausartzt from Germany. We have got a voucher from our community with the contact information of the home doctor few months ago. We haven’t contacted him yet, will see how the system goes.
0 Simas Joneliunas The doctors seem to be overworked to their limit at the hospitals. I had food poisoning once and (as required by my employer) had to go to the hospital. I spent 6 hours in the queue waiting to see a doctor to be directed to take a urine/blood test. The system that allows you to go to hospital at any time is convenient but the convenience comes at the expense of doctors dealing with a flood of non-serious ailments that could be solved by diverting the traffic to community hospitals/pharmacies.
0 Michael Cheung Thank you for your answer. I’ve learned from it. I have a colleague who was originally from Shanghai. She also told me that the doctors in China are not very well paid. She said that’s why patients are supposed to tip their doctor on top of the fees. Or maybe she was only referring to just surgeons in her examples to me? I can’t be sure. Is that true?
0 Mark King My turn, 10 years in China having been in many different countries, cities and country side. Agree with all BUT NOT the quality part. The truth is, this is a hit and miss. Sometimes you get one of the best other times you get the worst of the worst. Went to see an eye doctor, Xian, was told i had too much fire not enough water………. Went to see a doctor about an infection, was told from drunk doctor to stop drinking so much cold water (Shanghai) Best looking hospitals, fast service, cheap compared to other countries, fast Xrays and checks. Quality???????? hit and miss, take your chances.
0 Jimme Tan In the West, there is an insufficient doctor to attend too many patients and that is the reason for the long wait. Sometime the patient would have dropped dead before any doctor could attend to the numerous patients.
0 Jens Hiller Which “West” are we talking about here?
0 Jimme Tan My answer is more concerned with the Covid-19 which put great stress on the medical system in any country. I got to say that Germany is excellent in this case. It is very sad to see the UK is going through such a very stressful time. The US is a good example of a country of what coronavirus can do to any country if you delay in your respond and action against this very contagious disease. Your question gave me a jolt to be more specific regarding Europe, the UK and The USA. Germany is great.
0 Whitla Lindsay Canada is one place like that.
0 Siewling Loh My daughter then 5 years suffered a minor elbow dislocation. I went to the TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) section of the hospital in Xintan a small city outside Guanzhou and was immediately attended to. Got her elbow fixed in no time and was asked to come back in2 days time for a follow up check up. Cost us something like 200RMB. My friend’s SIL is a doctor and they are not highly paid like in the West.
0 Mateus Mahumane Many people will say you are paid, you are communist because you don’t vilify China
0 Rei Yan “If there is something positive about China, it must be CCP lies spread by Wumaos.”Whether it is politics or just normal daily life, they will always try to bash China.
0 Whitla Lindsay I like China and people always call me wumao. Never heard of the phrase before Quora. Have no idea what it means.
0 Bruce Mah You don''t need to know. Just be yourself and you are fine.
0 Emanuel Oprisan I''ve been living in 4 different European countries, plus mine,…never ever had to wait for medical care in ANY of them, France, Ireland, Spain, Romania, when you are sick you are sick and by law you get FREE health care. I speak from my own experiences, Europe is one of the best if not the BEST since it''s FREE.
0 En Li Is it “free” as a result of the medical insurance?
0 Emanuel Oprisan It IS ALWAYS FREE if it is an emergency, no question asked, does not matter if you have or NOT insurance. In a day by day normal check up, obviously you wait your turn, make appointment etc. BUT if you are really sick…no hospital in Europe will deny you treatment foras long as necessary. FACT.
0 William Chen Same in my country, Costa Rica. It''s free if it''s an emergency and you don''t have thw money to pay.
0 Kevin Wang Never wait? You are really blessed, I wait, every single time, for general practitioner (or family doctor), can be as soon as next day, for hospital or specialist, “next week” can be considered real quick, normally weeks, and months, and I am not kidding about it.
0 Krishna S If this is the case, why is it that people are leaving China in large numbers to immigrate to the western countries?
0 Jamie King Why do a lot of people want to emigrate to the US? It’s obviously not because of their fantastic health system.
0 Jus Chen there are lots of factors people care about, healthcare is only one of them. Actually some people choose to ignore this factor when they are young and strong.
0 Joe Joe more money, western countries usually have a higher gdp per capita
因为更多的钱，西方国家通常有更高的人均gdp0 Roger Jiang Since the Chinese govt launched the Rural Cooperative Healthcare Insurance Scheme (RCHIS) in 2009, Chinese farmers enjoyed comprehensive medical coverage for an annual insurance premium of merely 50 US dollars. In 2018, the Chinese govt upxed the Essential Drug List - the costs of drugs on this List would be reimbursed by various public medical insurance schemes, including the RCHIS. This list now includes mant expensive drugs, such as the Insulin Glargine, a kind of long lasting 3rd generation insulin that is now widely used in developed countries, and Herceptin, a highly effective anti-breast cancer drug. I wonder how many developing countries, while boasting free healthcare, reimburse the usage of Insulin Glargine and Herceptin?
